Abu Sayyaf rebel killed in a clash with Army Scout Rangers




SUMISIP, Basilan--- An Abu Sayyaf bandit was killed while 4 soldiers were wounded when a Scout Ranger patrol clashed with the lawless group in a hinterland village here at 10:40am today (Sep 4).
The soldiers of the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion led by Lt Col William Gonzales were conducting security patrol in Sitio Baag, Guiong village when they encountered at least 100 heavily-armed bandits led by Amir Mingkong.
The soldiers engaged the rebels in a fierce 4-hour long gunbattle after which the bandits fled in disarray, carrying with them several casualties.
An unidentified rebel was left behind by their fleeing comrades. Four soldiers sustained minor shrapnel wounds but they were declared out of danger after being given immediate medical attention.
The soldiers were conducting pursuit operations following the blood traces when another encounter broke out at around 4:00pm, when the Candiis detachment manned by the Special Forces and militiamen was attacked by at least 50 rebels.
The soldiers gallantly defended the detachment, forcing the bandits to withdraw afer an hour of exchange of fires.
One militiaman was wounded in the clash and he was promptly treated by the combat medics.
Col Carlito Galvez Jr, the Commander of the 104th Infantry Brigade has directed the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion to continuously pursue the rebels.
